Welcome to BOKA. An award-winning NYC architecture firm creating sophisticated residences across the country.
For this 25,000 square foot Shingle Style inspired home in the beautiful Hamptons area of Long Island, New York, Brian O’Keefe Architect was tasked to design the architectural interiors. The owner desired a world-class home that looked “as if it had been around for 100 years”, even though it was a new construction. With that in mind, BOKa immediately set about researching the precedents of the traditional eclectic style interiors of the grand country estates on Long Island’s Gold Coast from around the turn of the 20th century as well as the inventive designs of the great English architect Edwin Lutyens.
The floor plan of the home is organized to maximize and take full advantage of the wonderful water views from beautifully proportioned rooms. The main entry stair hall is a large two–story space with a vaulted ceiling. Brian designed the custom raised type panels on the walls to give the room scale and order. The large living room has a raised panel wainscot along with a diagonal coffered ceiling similar to one that the owner saw in London. The library is paneled in knotty Pine, and the family room paneling is based on Jacobean style details, and also incorporates salvaged barn beams for the ceiling. The design and detailing of the various moldings and paneling are based on traditional examples, but also help to create a visual hierarchy of formal, semi-formal and private areas of the house. Luxe and timeless, the materials used in the interiors of the house are all natural limestone and marble. The sustainable kitchen floor is reclaimed French flagstones. The wood flooring is sustainable red oak from reclaimed wine casks. The wood finishes in the house are either expertly patinated custom stains, or decorative paint treatments. In the end the overall effect is a comfortable country home on the water inspired by the grand estates of Long Island’s, not just another overdone Hamptons beach house.
The interiors, decorated by renowned Interior Designer Marjorie Shushan, include the use of custom decorative paint treatments, discerning antique selections, exquisite fabrics, and accessories. Altogether, the decor and the design of the interiors counter the home’s size and achieved the owner’s goal of wanting the house to feel comfortable, inviting and livable.
